Staggered Row Spacing for Privacy
The best way to build a privacy screen is to use two staggered rows if you have the space. By doing so, you will need less trees while providing plenty of space for your trees. For example, if you space your trees in staggered rows, 12' apart, then you will actually have a tree every 6' from a distance.
This type of spacing will also allow you to use multiple species of trees. For example, you might consider using white spruce (shorter) in the row closest the road and putting Norway spruce (taller) in the row towards the home. This will give you some variety and also lessen the risk of losing your screen should disease hit one of the species.
You can use any spacing you like depending on how thick you want the screen. You can find our recommendations for Norway, white, and blue spruce
